Shortly before Christmas, we ran into an old friend. She was telling us that, like my husband, her health had failed and she is now living on disability. Her next statement, however, made me stop and think: she felt that because she couldn't work anymore, she had lost her purpose.
So what is your purpose? Is it to hold a job? Is it to serve your family? Is it to lead the world to Christ? Consider the following passage from Ephesians 1 (verses 3 - 12):
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! He has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly realm, just as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world to be holy and blameless in his presence. In love he predestined us for adoption to himself through Jesus Christ, according to the pleasure of his will, so that we would praise his glorious grace that he gave us in the Beloved One. In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our offenses, according to the riches of God's grace that he lavished on us, along with all wisdom and understanding, when he made known to us the secret of his will. This was according to his plan that he set forth in Christ to usher in the fullness of the times and to gather up all things in Christ, both things in heaven and things on earth. In Christ we were also chosen when we were predestined according to the purpose of the one who does everything according to the intention of his will, so that we who had already fixed our hope on Christ might live for his praise and glory. For the
Christian - a person who has acknowledged s/he is a sinner and cannot get to heaven apart from trusting in the finished work of Jesus Christ on the cross - the purpose of their life is to bring praise and glory to Jesus Christ. That's it. Yes - your job, witnessing, your family, church attendance - all have the potential to bring glory to God. But simply doing those things for their own sake is nothing more than trying to earn your salvation. When glorifying the Lord, giving Him the rightful place in your life, is uppermost, everything else will fall into its proper place.
So, what is
your purpose?
